Reception Signage? Handwritten is best, of course!

Reception Signage? Handwritten is best, of course!

First of all, I want to thank Traci Arney Photography for all of the BEAUTIFUL photographs contained in this post!  Her work is amazing.  These photos were taken at the wedding & reception of one my favorite clients this year (at Fearrington Village).

Creative reception signage is so popular these days — signs on chalkboards, window panes, Kraft paper on burlap covered bulletin boards, elegant mirrors and weathered wood…the sky is the limit.

I may be biased, but I think handwritten signs are much more personal, welcoming and appealing to the eye!

A sign to greet guests as they arrive at the ceremony!  Variations of this wording abound.  The bride and I chose the wording of this sign below because it is more inclusive and friendlier in tone than the “choose a seat, not a side” version.  Don’t you agree?

Signature Cocktails are all the rage at wedding receptions.  This sign was written on slate with chalkboard pens…

Instead of the traditional table numbers, my client chose to use table names, which definitely add a personal touch to any reception.  These tables were named for dates significant throughout the courtship of the bride & groom.  The signs were written with white chalkboard pens on framed chalkboards with easel backs.  An easy way to create small, framed chalkboards is to purchase a picture frame, remove the glass – and spray it with chalkboard paint (in a spray can).  Reinsert the glass in the frame and…voilà.. instant chalkboard!

Guestbook signs are always helpful!

The bride & groom framed “fun facts” about themselves – which were displayed creatively at the reception.  I wrote the facts with a white gel pen in my “Curly Contempo” writing style on black paper.  I love the frames!

What’s New Now? These Writing Styles!

Howdy y’all!  (I even say “all y’all” from time to time……I was definitely born & raised in the South.)

I recently tried something new for a client…writing my “Fancy Script” style with a traditional calligraphy pen (not a monoline gel pen).  I like this look!

A client asked if I could do my Contempo writing style “larger & looser.”  Why, yes I can!   “Freestyle Contempo”…

I call this style “Celebration” …

As a Breaking Bad fan I created this ”Cracked Ice” writing style awhile ago….it hasn’t taken off with my clients (I can’t understand why….)

Howdy!

Here’s my traditional “Calligraphy” style written on a non-traditional envelope.  The flourishes have evolved over the years.

Here’s my most popular writing style – “Fancy Script.”  These flourishes have also evolved since I first started offering this style.

Shimmer envelopes are beautiful and oh-so-trendy, but most inks will not adhere to the surface and will smear with the slightest touch.  However, opaque paint pens work great on shimmer envelopes!  Here’s my “Fancy Script” style written with an extra-fine black DecoColor paint pen:

Here’s my “Block Script” writing style in navy ink (so popular right now….)

Here’s one of my newer writing styles - “Shoreline,” which can be written using 1, 2 or 3 different ink colors.  Here it is with berry ink for the text and a gray watercolor swoooosh:

Here’s my “Contempo” writing style.  I *really* like these square Kraft paper envelopes with string & button closure. (Yes, deliverable by the postal service!)

More Escort Cards & Place Cards? Got ‘em right here!

On occasion, embellished escort cards or place cards will have a pre-printed line on which the guest’s name should be written.  Oftentimes, these lines are way, way, way too short!  One would have to write the names soooooo small to fit on the lines.  Solution?  Write the first name above the line – and the cards look beautiful!

Here are some pretty place cards written in my traditional “calligraphy” writing style:

Southern Living Weddings vendor? Yes, ma’am!

Southern Living Weddings magazine is chock-full of colorful, gorgeous real weddings and charming ideas & inspiration to help you plan your dream day.  So I was thrilled to learn that the wedding of one of my brides would be featured in the current edition – and I was even more thrilled to be listed as a vendor (!).

Please enjoy all of the beautiful photos below by Elisa B. Photography.

Natalie & Travis were married last June at The Greenbrier Sporting Club in West Virginia….a truly amazing venue.

I loved doing their place cards on Kraft paper tags – very befitting of their casual, rustic reception.

Take a look below at the creative way Natalie & Travis displayed their guests’ escort tags.  The white ink on the purple tags is a little hard to see – but I promise you, the tags were awesome!  Natalie asked me to make the sign on the navy paper “on the fly” - and I love how it doesn’t look perfectly laid out or overwrought…..it’s relaxed & fun.

My apprentice Hitch (orange kitty) is taking a nap on warm laundry, fresh from the dryer.  Here is Blossom, taking advantage of the vacancy on the top of my desk.  Blossom is old & grumpy, but she can be sweet when she wants to be.  I love her just the same.

Here’s a WONDERFUL 2013 – full of beautiful envelopes & beautiful weddings!

Beautiful Reception Escort Cards, Place Cards & Table Signs? Check These Out!

I love the unique scalloped edges of these escort cards.  The tented cards were strung along twine using teeny-tiny clothespins. I wrote each guest’s name in black calligraphy.  My bridal client wanted the table assignments written inside the tented cards, which I think is a grand idea!  These tented cards serve as very special folded notes, to be given to a dear friend.

For the table name signs, I outlined the cards, by hand, in gold ink.  I wrote the table names in calligraphy with a broad nib.  The tables were named after the bride & groom’s favorite places.   Here are photos of a few:

What’s New? These Writing Styles!

What’s New? These Writing Styles!

I’ve been creating & refining some new wedding invitation writing styles over the past few months.  I hope you like them!

Below is my “Finespun” writing style.  I use a very fine writing nib, hand-dipped in ink.  The lines are delicate and romantic.  Swoon.

F I N E S P U N

I’ve been doing lots of escort card & place card “tags” for clients.  Tags are apparently quite trendy!  I thought it would be cool to somehow combine a tag & an invitation envelope…..and I created this “All Aboard!” writing style:

ALL ABOARD!

I traced actual tags onto an envelope (a large tag for the guest’s address; a small tag for the return address).  I outlined everything in markers.  I drew the black “string” with a thick sharpie.  I drew a slight shadow beneath the tags for a realistic effect.

Below is my “Waverly” writing style, which blends traditional calligraphy and block script.  This style works best on large envelopes.  The gorgeous linen envelope depicted in the photograph is 5-1/2″ x 9″.

Below are photos of my “Shoreline” writing style.  This style can be done on almost any size envelope.

I typically only offer my traditional “Calligraphy” writing style in black ink.  However, I recently discovered some wonderful gold ink that works great!  See below….
